The wall near the present-day Nieuwe Markt. In the foreground a pool called the 'Halve Maan' (= half moon). This used to be a terribly stinking swampy mass in summer. All the filth washed away from the city ended up here. In front of the wall, the ropeyard can be seen, and on the wall the harbour mill. This mill was also called Hubertus mill, as it stood on the St. Hubertustoren. The Hubertustoren was also known as the Red Tower; in the 16th century, this tower was filled up with earth to serve as bastion. This bastion can be seen in this picture towards the left of the ropeyard.
