Nico Beens: The web page of Nijmegen is fantastic and have passed it on to all my relatives here in Australia. It means more to them then me for I was born in Eindhoven in 1939 but do remember a lot of Nijmegen.
My father's factory NEGLIN ( NEderlandse GLoeilamp INdustrie ) was started by him in 1924 and he was the first to manufacture the globes for the automobiles and he also made the coloured glass decorations for the xmas tree. He was doing so well that in 1929 Philips made him an offer and bought the factory from him and employed him for the rest of his life and Philips changed the name to SPLENDOR. Regretably I dont have any pictures of the factory other than the ones on the web pages which brought back many memories that my father used to talk about. My father's name was Cornelius ("KEES") Heinrich Gerard Beens and was born in 1896 and died in Adelaide in 1962.
My father was commissioned by the Dutch and American Govt. to make an atom bomb in miniature out of glass to show the scientists the splitting of the atom and here in Australia there was a great story in the Adelaide newspaper about my father and his accomplishments. He also made a tube three inches long and four ten thousandths of an inch thick which could only be seen under a microscope. It was used to make audible the vibrations of a violin string which were inaudible in the ordinary way.
One of his great pleasures was making a complete symphony orchestra out of coloured glass and it was exhibited at the Royal Adelaide Exhibition and all around Australia.
My father worked for Philips Nijmegen till 1939 and was then sent to Philips Eindhoven to head the glass section until 1951 when he took the whole family to Australia and worked for Philips Adelaide until his death in 1962.
